Position Available: SEAC Member At Large

Posted On Tuesday September 24, 2024

The Durham District School Board’s (DDSB) Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is seeking applications for one Member at Large position.

What is SEAC?

Under Ontario’s Education Act, every student is entitled to a program which meets their needs and supports equitable and inclusive education. In Durham, our Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) helps the Board protect the rights of students with special learning needs. SEAC provides information, advice and assistance to parents/guardians to address potential barriers in education for their children. SEAC advises and makes recommendations to the district concerning the establishment and development of special education programs and services. SEAC meetings are a monthly (September – June) forum for SEAC members to discuss and provide advice on district programs and support services for exceptional students.

Qualifications Required to be a Member at Large (Education Act, Ontario Regulation 464/97 SEAC):

  • Over the age of 18 years
  • Residents in the school board area
  • Qualified to vote for members of that board
  • Not employed by the board
  • Active involvement or knowledge of programs and services for children and youth with exceptionalities is an important consideration
  • Members at Large need not have children in DDSB schools

DDSB Special Education Plan

The DDSB’s Special Education Plan guides our focus on inclusive models of special education to identify, prevent and address barriers that may affect equitable and accessible learning opportunities, experiences and outcomes for students. SEAC provides important community voice and expertise on programs and services that support the DDSB’s commitments and Special Education Plan.
